Latinization and Inter-Ecclesial Relations in Bohemia and Moravia: AHistorical and Legal Perspective

Abstract

The article explores the historical and legal evolution of the process of
Latinization and its impact on inter-ecclesial relations in Bohemia and
Moravia. Drawing on a detailed historical analysis, the author traces the
development of the Eastern and Western traditions from the Cyrillo-
Methodian mission through the Union of Brest to the modern legislative
frameworks of the Catholic Church. The article outlines the canonical shifts
introduced by the Code of Canon Law (CIC) and the Code of Canons of
the Eastern Churches (CCEO), highlighting how current legislation seeks
to protect the identity of Eastern Catholic Churches against systematic
Latinization. The findings show that historical political pressures and
a lack of legal awareness have often led to the misidentification of the
Latin Church with the universal Church, creating practical complications
in contemporary pastoral care, particularly regarding migration and the administration of sacraments. The author points out the necessity of
a consistent application of current canon law and suggests that a deeper
understanding of the "unity in diversity" principle is essential for the future
of the Apostolic Exarchate and the spiritual life of the region.
